Journey's hit song makes history

MANILA, Philippines -- The Arnel Pineda-led American rock band Journey makes history as their hit song “Don’t Stop Believin’” was named the number one single of the 20th century.

The recognition coincided with the band’s live performance on the streets of New York July 29, as reported by Journey also guested on NBC’s “Today” show where they were presented a plaque to celebrate the feat, which was certified by analysts at media research company, Nielsen SoundScan.

Notably, “Don’t Stop Believin,’” which was first released in 1981, has just turned 30, as announced on the group’s official site ( July 25. The post read: “This month one of rock’s classic songs turns 30: Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin.’”

On their “CBS Sunday Morning” interview July 24, host Jim Axelrod sat down with the band to talk about the enduring power of the beloved American song and the group’s “Eclipse” world tour. The band also gave an update on Pineda’s story including the last four years since “CBS Sunday Morning” introduced the Filipino singer as a member of the band.

Pineda was officially welcomed by Journey in 2007. He is part of a long line of singers picked to replace former lead vocalist Steve Perry who served the band from 1977-1998. Just like Charice and Maria Aragon, Pineda was also discovered on YouTube.

Band leader and guitarist Neal Schon asked him to audition for Journey.

“Don’t Stop Believin’” was featured on the hit American musical series “Glee” during the show’s first season in 2009.
