Fil-Aussie RJ Rosales dies at 37

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-Australian singer-actor RJ Rosales passed away last Dec. 4 in Sydney, Australia. He was 37.

The cause of his death has yet to be ascertained. Rosales’ family also requested for privacy in their period of mourning.

Messages of love and sympathy poured out for Rosales via social networking site Twitter on Dec. 6, especially from his colleagues in the industry. Some of the tweets read:

Ogie Alcasid, singer, composer, actor: “i hope that the news that my friend RJ Rosales passed away is not true. he was a good man with a kind heart. we were together in singapore a few mos ago to perform for a charity event.”

Joanna Ampil, Broadway performer: “Please say a prayer for my friend, RJ Rosales who passed on yesterday. He was a wonderful spirit, beautiful inside-out and my true angel.”

Kim Atienza, TV host, trivia king: “may he rest in peace. he is a talented man.”

Ryan Cayabyab, composer extraordinaire: “pause a minute for a comrade in the industry. so young. so talented. gone too soon.”

Erik Santos, champ singer: “Naalala ko pa. Nag back up pa ko sa concert ni RJ Rosales the week before I auditioned for Star In A Million. RIP Kuya RJ.”

Actors Franco Laurel, Luis Alandy, Pinky Amador, as well as host JM Rodriguez and fashion designer Rajo Laurel, tweeted their condolences to Rosales on Dec. 5.

Rosales’ career took off when he was cast in the Australian production of the acclaimed “Miss Saigon” back in 1996. A slew of theater productions in Singapore and other neighboring countries came soon after.

Locally, Rosales appeared on a number of ABS-CBN shows including “Attagirl,” “Sa Puso Ko, Iingatan Ka” and “ASAP.” He was also part of the 2005 multi-awarded Metro Manila Film Festival drama “Blue Moon,” for which he got nominated Best Supporting Actor.

Another one of his popular works in the Philippines was his duet with Carol Banawa, “Together Forever,” the theme song of the 2002 Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa starrer, “Forevermore.”

Online sources stated that Rosales returned to Australia a few years ago to join Cameron Mackintosh’s re-staging of “Miss Saigon,” where he played Thuy. His performance earned him a nomination for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical at the 2007 Helpmann Awards
